The setting is enticing
Mikey Madison plays the title role, a lap dancer from New York. Then the story captivates us. He recklessly marries (the young, immature son of a Russian oligarch) and then ends up in a terrible mess.
There is one standout performance from Madison, but all the performances are good
Excessive depictions of nudity and sex are out of fashion for mainstream films, but both that and the increasingly comical drama have a rare liveliness. Even the sweet spots: Las Vegas and Coney Island in the off-season are cleverly captured. At over two hours, it’s too long, but it holds our attention because we can’t imagine how it’s going to end.
The conclusion is not a disappointment
