Scenario
It follows Hans Jürgen Höss, the son of Rudolf Höss, the camp commandant at Auschwitz, as he confronts his father’s involvement in the murder of over a million Jews during the Holocaust. Hans-Jürgen Höss: I don’t think the mother was really involved. But I’m sure he didn’t know the details. After introducing us to the story of a Jewish survivor from Auschwitz and the surviving descendants of the longest-serving commandant of the death camp, these unusual interlocutors sit down for a chat.
eighty years after the fact
They are essentially convening their own miniature truth and reconciliation commission. Hopefully it will create a template for others to follow in the future. The commander and his family are the same as Zone of Interest (2023), a wonderful tour de force of filmmaking with surprisingly little to say and quite a lot going on. (The life of the Höss family became really interesting only after the liberation.) This film is built on the premise that the term “banality of evil” is framed as follows: it contains some important insights about the Holocaust.

In fact, the poisonous influence, seductiveness and glamor of evil have more to do with it than its “banality”. not. Taken together, these two films leave a much more lasting impression than they do separately. A few key details need to be clarified: there is no mention that Rudolf Höss was raised as a Catholic priest.
