Steve Martin plays the concertina in several scenes
Scenario
Three strangers who live in the same New York City apartment building and are obsessed with true crime suddenly find themselves involved in a murder. He is actually a very experienced and talented musician. In the first episode, the viewer learned that CHS lived above Oliver, who lived above Mabel, with that elevator scene.
The true highlight of the series
BUT the opening has CHS in an apartment on the 7th floor, Oliver on the 8th, Mabel on the 9th – in reverse order and well below CHS’s. Featured in AniMat Animation Mad Actor: The Rat of All My Dreams (2020). When the initial episodes of Only Murder in a Building; coming out 100% on Rotten Tomatoes, I have to admit I was skeptical that Steve Martin and others could maintain the quirky and fun nature of this comedy-thriller series until the last episode.
But Martin Short, Selena Gomez and him are unlikely
Still, a terrifying trio that keeps us enthralled and entertained until the very last episode of this well-written and infectiously funny episode. Steve Martin and the fantastic Martin Short play a pair of geriatric artists who encounter a young man (Gomez) who also happens to be one of the podcast fanatics’ murders. How this ragtag trio comes together to solve a strange murder in his apartment forms the rest of this story.
While Warner Bros
had a huge fan base like Monk (2002-2009) and Psych (2006-2014), the genre has always been a tightrope walk that most creators avoid. Finding humor in the most unlikely places, full of unexpected twists and turns, and a host of wonderful supporting characters, it’s no surprise that Steve Martin was also one of the creative geniuses who wrote this piece. 2, when I hit a stunning cliffhanger with a stunning climax.
I recommend it!
