Steve Martin actually plays the accordion in various scenes
Scenario
Three strangers – who live in the same New York apartment building and share a true crime obsession – suddenly find themselves involved in a murder. He is actually a very accomplished and talented musician. The viewer learned in the first episode that CHS lived above Oliver who lived above Mabel, with that elevator scene. BUT the opening shows CHS in an apartment on the 7th floor, Oliver on the 8th, Mabel on the 9th – the reverse order and well below the actual floor of CHS’s apartment in the series. Featured in the cast of AniMat’s Crazy Cartoon: The Rat of All My Dreams (2020). Season 1 (9/10) When this series came along, my girlfriend wasn’t particularly interested.

I’m a big fan of comedy crime series and loved Steve Martin when I was younger, but his enthusiasm for both is moderate. But after five minutes, I had to stop and make him watch it, because we’re New Yorkers and this show sums up New York in five minutes. The weird relationships with passersby, the artsy types, the justified paranoia, it was all there and instantly hilarious. The show is about a trio of murder-podcast fanatics who bond over a real-life murder in their luxury apartment building. But they’re also hiding secrets from each other in a wonderful structure of a mystery within a mystery. Everyone has secrets, the show says, and digging deep is a fascinating exercise.
The cast is terrific
Martin is understated and funny, Short, who I’m usually lukewarm to, is very funny as a flamboyant theater director, and Selena Gomez more than holds her own as the hilarious and sarcastic temporary tenant. This show has been a very popular item as far as I know – certainly my friends (and fellow New Yorkers) love it – so I was shocked to see how many user reviews simply hate this show, or find it mediocre, to the point that they insist that all positive reviews are paid for. This response is inexplicable to me. The show is amazing. When a new episode came out, we watched it immediately. It’s just so, so, so, so good.
Season 3 (6/10): What the hell happened?
Ignore the doubters, this is a must-see. Other seasons: Season 2 (8/10): A little weaker than the first season, but still excellent. In season 3, Steve Martin played his character like a complete idiot and after 2 great seasons, Selena Gomez became dull – more moody and less sarcastic. And when the mystery was solved, oh my goodness, it was the most absurd motifs you could possibly find. Sure, there were still some good moments, some good guest stars, some surprisingly enjoyable songs. But OMG.
Probably the second best season after the first
Season 4 (9 stars) Much to my relief, Season 4 was a return to form – Martin was no longer an idiot and Gomez’s delicious sarcasm was fully restored. There are some fun guest stars – particularly funny is Eva Longoria who plays herself as a truly horrible person – the mystery is solid and keeps you on the edge of your seat, the plot twists are satisfying and it’s all extremely funny.
